The question: "If you eat a gigantic meal - say 2,000 calories in a single sitting - does your gut absorb all of it? Does your liver have to store all of that, or does some of it pass through?"
Not a dumb question at all - in fact, it's a really smart, nuanced one that lots of physicians (and dietitians!) quietly wonder too. Here's the breakdown.
Yes, Your Gut Can Absorb All of It - Eventually
If you eat 2,000 calories in one sitting, your gastrointestinal system is incredibly efficient and will absorb the vast majority of those calories over time. The rate of absorption might slow a bit depending on meal composition (fat and fiber delay gastric emptying), but unless there's malabsorption, most of it is getting in.
Then What Happens?
Your body has to figure out what to do with all those nutrients:
- Glucose from carbs goes into the bloodstream → triggers insulin → gets stored as:
- Glycogen (in liver and muscle) - but storage is limited (maybe 100 g in liver, 300-500 g in muscle).
- Excess glucose beyond glycogen needs? Converted into fatty acids in the liver via de novo lipogenesis and stored as fat.
- Fat is absorbed as chylomicrons into the lymph system → bloodstream → straight to storage if not immediately used for energy.
- Protein is broken into amino acids → used for repair, rebuilding, and enzyme/hormone production → excess? Oxidized for energy or converted into fat or glucose intermediates.
So yes - your liver, muscles, adipose tissue, and other organs are handling it. There's not some magical "overflow chute" that sends extra calories down the toilet (unless you're dealing with pathology like steatorrhea, short gut, or certain post-bariatric states).
But here's a wrinkle: if the meal is so large that digestion slows significantly or is disrupted (think binge-eating extremes), you might see:
- Delayed gastric emptying (you feel awful and bloated).
- Incomplete digestion if there's vomiting or diarrhea.
- But still - calorically speaking - most of it gets absorbed.
